It’s the start of a new school year at Hawthorne Preparatory School, and it's a definite that this year will be a memorable one. Over the summer, the headmaster and the guidance department put their heads together to come up with a way to help the students connect. They wanted each young adult at Hawthorne to know that they were not alone, and they wanted the message to stick. In the middle of July, a required assignment was sent out to everyone. Students each received an envelope addressed to Hawthorne Preparatory, and were asked to mail in a secret of theirs. To prevent anyone from finding out whose secret it was, there were to be no names mentioned and it was to be typed on a slip of paper instead of hand written. Though obviously a bit weary of the whole thing, each student sent in a secret before the summer's end.

Upon their arrival back at school, each unsuspecting student found themselves greeted with a sealed envelope laid neatly atop his or her bed. Each envelope held a secret; not one of their own, but instead, a secret of another student at Hawthorne. The purpose was that they would hopefully relate to someone, maybe see that everyone is struggling in their own way. No one ever expected that the students would take matters into their own hands. Completely anonymous, absent of even a handwriting clue, these secrets would plague each student’s minds until they had to do something about it. Eventually, they’d want to know whose secret they possessed. Eventually, they'd want to help that person. Eventually, they’d be sorry they did. Not everyone is exactly as they appear.
